— MacCoy, Dance Central

Oleksander "MacCoy" Macko is a character who appears in Dance Central and Dance Central 3. He is a member of D-Coy alongside Dare.

Personality[]

MacCoy likes to present himself as cool and charismatic. He is a fan of old-school hip hop, frequently incorporating slang from its culture into his speech. He is also an aspiring DJ who aims to gain more recognition. He likes to use his knowledge and skills in an attempt to impress those around him, especially in order to romance women. However, his attempts often come off with a corny sensibility that makes him seem childish instead. Despite this, he is very genuine and positive, giving warm and comical feedback when critiquing others.

History[]

Past[]

MacCoy was born in a nation that was formerly part of the Soviet Union.[1] At an unknown point in his life, he began living with his grandmother.[1] He also once worked at a used book store. The details of this job are unknown, but he expresses a desire to not return to it.

Dance Central[]

MacCoy first appears in Dance Central as a playable character with two outfits: Sunday Best and Stylehead. Sunday Best is available from the start while Stylehead is available once the player earns 25 Stars with him. He is the default dancer used for the Hardcore Challenge.

In the beginning cutscene, MacCoy is on a train and overhears a noise coming from above. He opens the train's doors and catches one of the cards that Mo made to promote a club, smirking when he sees what it is. He later gets into Angel's car and is seated between Miss Aubrey and Taye, much to his pleasure. Afterwards, he is seen backflipping into a pool at the club.

Dance Central 2[]

MacCoy is not playable in Dance Central 2. However, he makes a cameo on a missing person poster in Lowdown, alluding to his abduction during the game's events.

Prerelease promotional material for Dance Central 3 revealed that he and Dare became agents for Dance Central Intelligence (DCI) during the events of Dance Central 2 and were spying on Dr. Tan for suspicious activity. However, they were both held captive at Tan Manor at some point,[1] delaying the mission from moving forward.

Dance Central 3[]

MacCoy returns in Dance Central 3 as an unlockable character and a part of D-Coy. He has two outfits: DC Classic and Under Control. He is unlocked with his DC Classic outfit at Level 10.[1] His Under Control outfit is unlocked at around Levels 32 and 33.[1]

MacCoy himself does not appear in the Story mode, but he is mentioned and seen sparsely. He is first mentioned by Lima, who informs the player of his and Dare's disappearance. Later on, DCI is able to find the two and discovers that they are under Dr. Tan's mind control. Once the player defeats Dr. Tan in the time portal, he is freed from the mind control and returns back to DCI HQ.

    • Glitch will also be the default dancer for these songs in Dance Central 3 if the player has not unlocked MacCoy yet. This also extends to Let It Roll, in which MacCoy is usually the default dancer.
  • In Dance Central 3, MacCoy's voice is noticeably different from his voice in Dance Central, now having a deeper voice and a lighter accent. This may be due to him having his new voice actor.
  • When the player gets 5 Stars with MacCoy in Dance Central 3, one possible animation he can do is part of the routine from Days Go By, a song from Dance Central.
  • MacCoy is featured as the DJ in concept art for Free Skate. This may indicate that he was once planned to appear there, but was ultimately scrapped. Additionally, his design also more closely resembles his Stylehead design from Dance Central, likely indicating that his redesign was not finalized in this stage of planning.

Concept and creation[]

Senior writer Helen "Hellion" McWilliams and character designer Matt "Perly" Perlot elaborated on the creation of MacCoy in a blog post published by Harmonix.

MacCoy's name comes from the phrase "the real McCoy", meaning that something is genuine (e.g. "they're the real McCoy"). He was initially designed to be more of an outsider in the world of dance and hip hop, with Perly joking that the final version of him is "far less creepy than I'd envisioned". His unique fashion sense came from this concept of being unorthodox and unfamiliar. However, most of the rest of the team working on Dance Central did not see him as such, so this theme was significantly reduced during his development. In this later version of MacCoy, his fashion sense was used to contrast his seriousness about dancing and to enforce the idea that no specific type of appearance reflects dance or hip hop as a whole.

MacCoy may be based on a gopnik, a young man of working-class background who usually lives in suburban areas of Russia and other former Soviet republics and comes from a family of poor education and income. He is described as a former Soviet[2] and wears tracksuit clothing, which is popular in the gopota subculture.
